The military prison at Guantánamo Bay represents grave violations of human rights by the U.S. government. The military prison at Guantánamo Bay has been open for over 24 years, since it first received detainees on January 11, 2002. The facility entered its 25th year on January 11, 2026. Of the 15 men remaining, six have never been charged with crimes. The others face charges in the military commission system. None should remain at Guantanamo.
The military detention center at Guantanamo is a huge waste of taxpayer dollars, costing more than $540 million a year to maintain for just 15 detainees. It has facilitated torture and other grave human rights violations.
The US government’s use of indefinite detention without charge as a response to 9/11 must be brought to an end. Guantánamo is an all-too-easy location for future abuses to occur. This detention facility should be shut down once and for all.
